Argan Oil vs Rosehip Oil: Which Is Better for Your Skin?
These are the two most popular facial oils in the UK, and for good reason. Both are lightweight, non-comedogenic and backed by genuine research. But they do different things. Picking the right one (or using both) starts with understanding what your skin actually needs.
Argan Oil: The All-Rounder
Cold-pressed from the kernels of the Argania spinosa tree in Morocco, Argan Oil is roughly 45% oleic acid and 35% linoleic acid, plus a heavy dose of Vitamin E. This composition makes it a true generalist. It hydrates without heaviness, absorbs quickly, protects against environmental damage, and works equally well on skin, hair and nails.
Best for: Daily hydration, all skin types, hair smoothing, nail strengthening, and anyone who wants one oil that does everything well.
How it feels: Lightweight, silky, absorbs in under a minute. No greasy residue. Works under makeup.
Rosehip Oil: The Targeted Repair Oil
Cold-pressed from the seeds of Rosa rubiginosa (primarily grown in Chile), Rosehip Oil is a specialist. It contains natural trans-retinoic acid (a form of Vitamin A) and high concentrations of Vitamin C. This is why it is often called "nature's retinol." It actively promotes cell turnover, fades hyperpigmentation, and smooths fine lines.
Best for: Dark spots, acne scars, fine lines, uneven tone, dull skin, and anyone focused on visible repair rather than general maintenance.
How it feels: Slightly drier than Argan, absorbs fast, has a faint golden-orange colour from the beta-carotene content.
The Key Differences
Vitamin A content: Rosehip has it. Argan does not. This is the single biggest difference. Vitamin A drives cell renewal, which is why Rosehip is better for scarring and pigmentation.
Versatility: Argan works on face, body, hair and nails without modification. Rosehip is primarily a facial oil. You can use it on the body, but the active ingredients are wasted there.
Price: Rosehip tends to cost slightly more because the extraction yield per kilogram of seeds is lower. Both are affordable as pure organic oils compared to equivalent serums with the same active ingredients.
Shelf life: Rosehip oxidises faster (6 to 9 months once opened). Argan lasts 12 to 18 months. Store both away from direct sunlight.
Can You Use Both?
Yes. This is actually the ideal approach for most people. Use Rosehip Oil at night when your skin is in repair mode and cell turnover is at its peak. The Vitamin A content works hardest while you sleep. Use Argan Oil in the morning for lightweight hydration and environmental protection under SPF or makeup.
Apply 3 to 4 drops of either to clean, slightly damp skin. Press gently into the face and neck. Do not rub.
Quick Decision Guide
Choose Argan if: You want one oil for everything. Your skin is generally healthy and you need daily hydration. You also want to use it on hair and body.
Choose Rosehip if: You have a specific concern (scars, dark spots, fine lines, dullness). You want visible improvement, not just maintenance.
Choose both if: You want the best of each. Rosehip at night for repair. Argan in the morning for protection. This is what our Glow Routine bundle is built around.
