Castor Oil for Hair Growth: What Actually Works

Castor oil has been used for hair and scalp health for generations. It is one of the most searched natural remedies for thinning hair, sparse brows and short lashes. Some claims are overblown. But the core science is solid, and when applied consistently, results are real.

Why Castor Oil Works

Castor oil is roughly 90% Ricinoleic Acid, a rare fatty acid found almost nowhere else in nature. Ricinoleic Acid does three things that matter for hair growth: it increases blood circulation to the follicle, it reduces inflammation around the scalp (a major cause of thinning), and it creates a protective seal that locks moisture into the hair shaft.

This is not the same as claiming castor oil "makes hair grow faster." What it does is create the conditions where hair can grow without being sabotaged by dryness, inflammation or poor circulation. For most people, that translates to thicker, fuller-looking hair over time.

How to Apply It for Scalp and Hair

Weekly scalp treatment: Part your hair into sections. Apply cold-pressed castor oil directly to the scalp using your fingertips or a dropper. Massage in circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. This is the step that drives the circulation benefit. Wrap your hair in a warm towel or shower cap and leave for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for maximum absorption. Wash out with a gentle shampoo (you may need two washes as castor oil is thick).

Tip: Castor oil is dense. If it feels too heavy on its own, mix it 50/50 with a lighter carrier oil like Argan Oil. You get the Ricinoleic Acid benefit with easier application and wash-out.

How to Apply It for Brows and Lashes

Use a clean mascara spoolie or a cotton bud. Dip it lightly in castor oil, tap off the excess, and apply a thin layer along each brow and across your lash line. Do this every night before bed. The key is consistency: results on brows and lashes take 4 to 8 weeks because the growth cycle for these hairs is slower than the scalp.

Avoid getting castor oil directly in your eyes. If you are prone to eye sensitivity, apply it only to the outer half of the lash line and let capillary action distribute it.

What Results to Actually Expect

Week 1 to 2: Hair and brows feel more conditioned. You may notice less breakage when brushing. No visible growth yet.

Week 3 to 6: Brows start to look fuller. Lashes feel stronger. Scalp feels healthier and less dry. This is the stage where most people who quit early miss the payoff.

Week 6 to 12: Visible difference in hair thickness and brow density. Lashes look longer and hold curl better. These results compound with continued use.

What Castor Oil Cannot Do

Castor oil will not regrow hair from completely dormant follicles. If a follicle has been inactive for years due to genetic pattern baldness or scarring, no topical oil will restart it. Where castor oil excels is strengthening and thickening hair that is still growing but thinning, weak or slow.

Choosing the Right Castor Oil

Cold-pressed and unrefined is non-negotiable. Refined castor oil has been heat-treated and chemically processed, which degrades the Ricinoleic Acid content. Hexane-extracted versions are cheaper but contain solvent residues. Look for 100% pure, cold-pressed, organic castor oil with a thick, golden-yellow colour and a faint nutty scent. If it is clear and odourless, it has been refined.
