A Simple Natural Skincare Routine Using Only Carrier Oils

The skincare industry sells complexity. Ten steps. Twelve products. A different active for every day of the week. The reality is that great skin comes from doing a few things well, consistently. Pure carrier oils have been used for skin health for thousands of years, and they remain some of the most effective ingredients available. No fragrance, no fillers, no confusion.

Here is a complete morning and evening routine built entirely from organic carrier oils. Two oils. Five minutes total. Designed for UK skin that deals with central heating, cold wind and inconsistent weather.

The Morning Routine (2 minutes)

Step 1: Cleanse with oil. This sounds counterintuitive, but the oil cleansing method is one of the most effective ways to clean skin without stripping it. Apply a small amount of Jojoba Oil to dry skin. Massage gently for 30 seconds. Jojoba dissolves sebum, makeup residue and daily grime because like dissolves like. Wipe away with a warm, damp flannel. Your skin should feel clean but not tight.

Step 2: Apply your morning oil. On slightly damp skin (this helps absorption), press 3 to 4 drops of a lightweight oil into your face and neck. Jojoba Oil or Grapeseed Oil are ideal for morning use. Jojoba mimics skin sebum and regulates oil production throughout the day. Grapeseed is even lighter and works well under SPF.

Step 3: SPF. This is the one non-oil step. Apply your preferred sunscreen over the top. Carrier oils do not provide UV protection. Never skip this in the morning, even on overcast UK days.

The Evening Routine (3 minutes)

Step 1: Double cleanse with oil. If you wore SPF or makeup, do two rounds of oil cleansing. First round: Almond Oil or Jojoba Oil on dry skin to dissolve everything. Wipe with a warm flannel. Second round: same oil, lighter application, to properly clean the skin underneath. This replaces micellar water, cleanser and makeup remover in a single product.

Step 2: Apply your evening oil. Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself. This is when you want an active oil, not just a hydrating one. Rosehip Oil is the strongest choice here. Its natural Vitamin A content drives cell turnover while you sleep, fading dark spots and smoothing texture over time. Apply 3 to 4 drops to clean skin, press into face and neck, and leave it.

For dry skin: Layer a few drops of Avocado Oil over the Rosehip to seal in moisture overnight. This occlusive layer is especially useful during UK winters when central heating dries skin out.

Weekly Additions

Hair and scalp treatment (once a week): Massage Castor Oil into your scalp. Apply Argan Oil from mid-lengths to tips. Wrap and leave for 30 minutes or overnight. Wash out with shampoo. This addresses scalp health and hair hydration in a single step.

Body moisture (as needed): After a shower, while skin is still damp, apply Almond Oil or Avocado Oil to the body. These heavier oils work brilliantly on the body where pore congestion is not a concern. Focus on elbows, knees, shins and any areas prone to dryness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use carrier oils instead of moisturiser?

Yes. Pure carrier oils like Jojoba, Argan and Almond provide hydration and barrier protection. For most skin types, 3 to 4 drops of the right oil replaces both serum and moisturiser.

Do carrier oils clog pores?

Not if you choose the right one. Jojoba, Grapeseed and Argan oils are non-comedogenic and safe for acne-prone skin. Heavier oils like Avocado and Castor are better for the body or for dry skin types specifically.

How many oils do I need for a complete routine?

Two is enough. One for morning (lightweight, fast-absorbing like Jojoba or Argan) and one for night (active repair like Rosehip). A single versatile oil like Jojoba can also work on its own if you want maximum simplicity.

The UK Climate Factor

UK skin deals with a specific set of challenges. Cold wind strips the outer barrier. Central heating dehydrates from the inside. Humidity fluctuates wildly between seasons. Carrier oils handle all of this because they work with the skin rather than overriding it. A ceramide serum and a hyaluronic acid mist are solving the same problems that a 30p drop of Jojoba Oil solves, just at 20x the price with added fragrance and preservatives.

Start with two oils. Give them three weeks. Adjust from there based on how your skin responds. That is the entire routine.
